Sound & Appearance
Cat-Back and Axle-Back Exhaust Systems
Cat-back and axle-back systems are popular ways to change exhaust
tone, volume and appearance while retaining the upstream factory
emissions equipment.
Installation may include:
- Removal of the original exhaust sections
- Cat-back exhaust installation
- Axle-back exhaust installation
- Muffler and resonator installation
- Exhaust-valve connection when supported
- Hanger and isolator inspection
- System alignment and clearance checks
- Exhaust-tip positioning
- Leak inspection
- Final heat-cycle and fastener review
The vehicle and exact system part number are reviewed before
installation to confirm body style, engine, exhaust-valve and
connection compatibility.
Performance Airflow
Performance Header Installation
Headers can improve airflow and substantially change exhaust sound,
but the installation must account for engine-bay clearance, heat,
steering components, starter access, connection pipes and
calibration requirements.
Header installation may include:
- Short-tube headers for supported applications
- Long-tube headers for supported applications
- Application-specific connection pipes
- Compatible gaskets and installation hardware
- Oxygen-sensor installation and harness routing
- Starter and wiring heat protection
- Clearance and contact-point inspection
- Exhaust-system alignment
- Leak inspection
- Supporting calibration when required
Header labor is quoted by application because installation time and
component access vary substantially between vehicles.
exhaust components or calibration. Product compatibility and
emissions requirements must be verified before installation.
Adjustable Sound
Valved Exhaust Systems
Valved systems can provide a quieter operating mode and a more
aggressive open-valve sound when the vehicle and exhaust system
support that functionality.
A valved-exhaust installation may involve:
- Factory-valve-compatible exhaust systems
- Aftermarket valve controllers
- Valve actuator transfer
- Wiring and control-system installation
- Vacuum-operated valve components
- Exhaust-mode functionality checks
- Clearance and heat-management review
Compatibility with factory drive modes, actuators, wiring and
warning systems must be confirmed before installation.
Choose the Right Character
Exhaust Sound Planning
Louder is not automatically better. Exhaust design affects tone,
cold-start volume, highway drone, cabin resonance and how the
vehicle sounds at different engine speeds.
Before recommending a system, we consider:
- Desired sound level
- Cold-start volume
- Daily driving and highway use
- Cabin drone and resonance
- Factory or aftermarket exhaust valves
- Engine configuration
- Headers and other existing modifications
- Future performance plans
- Tip style and exterior appearance
Sound is subjective and can vary between vehicles, even when they
use similar components. Online recordings are useful references but
do not perfectly represent real-world volume or tone.
Cars & Trucks
Truck Exhaust Systems
Truck exhaust selection should account for cab configuration,
towing, highway use, exit location and the desired sound inside and
outside the vehicle.
Truck exhaust services may include:
- Cat-back exhaust systems
- Performance mufflers
- Compatible header systems
- Single- and dual-exit configurations
- Side- and rear-exit systems
- Exhaust-tip upgrades
- Fitment correction
- Supporting calibration when required
Towing load, highway drone, exhaust heat and clearance around
hitches, spare tires and suspension components are considered
during selection.
Specialty Applications
European and Specialty-Vehicle Exhaust
SSV Texas installs supported exhaust systems on select European,
exotic and specialty vehicles. These installations may require
additional disassembly, electronic-valve integration, heat
management or model-specific procedures.
Specialty installations may involve:
- Mid-engine exhaust systems
- Valved performance exhausts
- Rear bumper or underbody disassembly
- Heat shields and thermal protection
- Electronic actuator integration
- Precise exhaust-tip alignment
- Model-specific hardware and procedures
The exact vehicle and exhaust-system part number must be reviewed
before scheduling.
Calibration
Exhaust and Header Tuning
Not every exhaust system requires tuning. Many properly designed
cat-back and axle-back systems can be installed without calibration
changes. Headers and more extensive airflow changes may require
tuning on supported applications.
Performance tuning starts at $600.
Tuning may address:
- Airflow changes from supported headers
- Fuel and ignition calibration
- Engine and transmission behavior
- Drivability after compatible modifications
- Coordination with intake or forced-induction upgrades
Tuning hardware, credits, licensing, control-module access and
diagnostic work are additional when required.
incompatible components or removed emissions equipment. Mechanical
and component problems must be corrected before tuning.
Final Details Matter
Exhaust Fitment and Alignment
Even a vehicle-specific system may require adjustment to achieve
proper tip alignment, body clearance and component separation.
Fitment work may include:
- Exhaust-tip centering and depth adjustment
- Hanger and isolator adjustment
- Pipe and muffler alignment
- Clamp positioning and tightening
- Clearance around suspension and driveline components
- Clearance around bumpers, valances and diffusers
- Inspection for contact or rattles
- Leak inspection
Used, damaged or poorly manufactured systems may require additional
correction beyond normal installation labor.

Common Questions
Exhaust and Header Frequently Asked Questions
How much does exhaust installation cost?
Installation is quoted by vehicle and system. Pricing depends on
component access, exhaust type, existing modifications, hardware
condition and whether additional alignment, repair or calibration
is required.
Does a cat-back exhaust require tuning?
Many properly designed cat-back and axle-back systems do not
require calibration changes. Requirements depend on the vehicle
and exact system. More extensive airflow changes may require
tuning.
Do headers require tuning?
Headers may require tuning depending on the application and
complete modification package. We verify calibration requirements
before installation. Performance tuning starts at $600, with
required hardware, credits and licensing additional.
Will an exhaust system cause a check-engine light?
A compatible cat-back or axle-back system should not normally
create an emissions-related fault when installed correctly.
Headers, incompatible components, exhaust leaks or sensor issues
may result in faults that require diagnosis and correction.
Can you make my vehicle louder without excessive drone?
We can help select a system based on the desired volume, tone and
highway behavior. No system can guarantee the complete absence of
drone because cabin resonance and personal sound tolerance vary.
Do you install valved exhaust systems?
Yes, on supported applications. Factory-valve compatibility,
actuators, wiring, controllers and available operating modes must
be verified before installation.
Can I supply my own exhaust or headers?
Yes, following application, condition and completeness review.
Customer-supplied components are not warrantied by SSV Texas.
Additional labor may apply to incomplete, damaged, used or
poor-fitting systems.
Do you remove catalytic converters or emissions equipment?
No. SSV Texas does not remove, defeat or disable required
emissions equipment or provide calibration intended to conceal
its removal.
What information should I send for a quote?
