Automotive Performance Tuning

Engine and Transmission Calibration Built Around the Vehicle

Performance tuning should match the engine, transmission, fuel,
modifications and intended use of the vehicle. SSV Texas provides
calibration services for supported cars, trucks and performance
applications throughout Central Texas.

Whether the vehicle is naturally aspirated, turbocharged,
supercharged or used for towing, we begin by reviewing the complete
combination—not simply loading a generic file.

Performance tuning starts at $600.

Engine Management

Engine Calibration

Engine calibration coordinates how the powertrain responds to
airflow, fuel, load, temperature, driver input and other operating
conditions.

Depending on the platform and combination, tuning may address:

  • Fuel delivery
  • Ignition timing
  • Airflow modeling
  • Throttle response
  • Torque management
  • Idle behavior
  • Cold and warm startup behavior
  • Variable camshaft operation
  • Boost-related controls when supported
  • Cooling-fan operation
  • Tire-size and gearing corrections
  • Required injector and airflow parameters

Available adjustments vary by vehicle and tuning platform. No
specific adjustment or performance result is assumed until the
application has been reviewed.

Shift Strategy

Transmission Calibration

Transmission behavior has a major effect on drivability and how the
vehicle delivers power. Supported transmission calibration can be
coordinated with the engine tune and intended use.

Transmission tuning may address:

  • Shift scheduling
  • Part-throttle shift behavior
  • Wide-open-throttle shift behavior
  • Shift pressure and firmness
  • Torque-converter operation
  • Torque-management strategy
  • Manual-mode behavior
  • Tire-size and axle-ratio changes
  • Towing-oriented operation when supported

Transmission adjustments must account for the transmission’s
condition, internal components, power level and intended workload.

Bolt-On Performance

Naturally Aspirated Tuning

Naturally aspirated vehicles may benefit from calibration after
compatible airflow, exhaust or drivetrain changes.

Common combinations may include:

  • Cold-air intake systems
  • Throttle-body upgrades
  • Intake-manifold changes
  • Headers and exhaust systems
  • Camshaft-equipped applications
  • Injector changes
  • Axle-ratio changes
  • Wheel and tire-size changes
  • Multiple compatible bolt-on components

Expected results depend on the vehicle, parts, fuel and condition.
Tuning cannot correct a mechanical problem or make incompatible
components work together.

Supercharged & Turbocharged

Forced-Induction Tuning

Forced-induction calibration must match the supercharger or
turbocharger system, pulley or boost configuration, injectors,
fuel system, airflow components and required fuel.

Forced-induction combinations may require review of:

  • Supercharger or turbocharger system
  • Pulley size or boost configuration
  • Fuel injectors and fuel-pump capacity
  • Airflow and pressure sensors
  • Intercooler and cooling-system capacity
  • Spark plugs and ignition condition
  • Headers and exhaust components
  • Engine compression and internal components
  • Transmission and driveline capacity
  • Fuel type and minimum octane requirement
The vehicle must always be operated with the fuel type and minimum
octane required by its calibration. Incorrect or poor-quality fuel
can cause severe engine damage.

Usable Performance

Truck and Towing Calibration

Truck tuning should account for how the vehicle is actually used.
A daily-driven or towing vehicle has different requirements than a
lightly loaded performance application.

Truck-calibration planning may consider:

  • Trailer weight and towing frequency
  • Payload and vehicle equipment
  • Available fuel and required octane
  • Tire diameter and axle ratio
  • Transmission temperature and shift behavior
  • Engine and intercooler cooling
  • Altitude and operating climate
  • Daily drivability
  • Emissions compliance

Tell us how the truck is used before calibration and supporting
components are selected.

The Process

How a Tuning Project Begins

Before calibration, we identify the vehicle, confirm platform
support and review its mechanical configuration.

The process may include:

  • VIN and vehicle identification
  • Engine and transmission verification
  • Complete modification review
  • Fuel-type and octane confirmation
  • Tuning-platform verification
  • Diagnostic-trouble-code scan
  • Mechanical-condition review
  • Existing tune or calibration review when available
  • Calibration installation
  • Data collection and review
  • Revision and drivability verification when required

The exact process varies by vehicle, controller and tuning
platform.

Hardware & Access

Tuning Devices, Credits and Licensing

Many modern vehicles require dedicated hardware, vehicle-specific
credits, licensing or control-module access before calibration can
be installed.

Additional requirements may include:

  • Handheld tuning devices
  • Diagnostic or programming interfaces
  • Vehicle-specific tuning credits
  • ECM, PCM or TCM licensing
  • Control-module unlocking
  • Manufacturer calibration fees
  • Remote-calibration services
  • Shipping for supported mail-in services

These costs are separate from the $600 starting calibration price
unless specifically included in the written estimate.

Do not purchase a tuning device or credits before confirming
compatibility. Similar-looking devices may be locked to another
vehicle, unsupported on the application or unable to perform the
required programming.

Before Calibration

Mechanical Condition Matters

Tuning cannot repair a mechanical, fuel-system, electrical or
driveline problem. Existing issues should be diagnosed before
performance calibration begins.

Items that may require attention include:

  • Active diagnostic trouble codes
  • Misfires or ignition problems
  • Fuel-pressure or injector problems
  • Air or vacuum leaks
  • Cooling-system problems
  • Abnormal oil or coolant consumption
  • Transmission slipping or shift concerns
  • Wiring or sensor faults
  • Incomplete or incompatible modifications
  • Unknown or locked existing calibrations

Diagnostic work and mechanical repairs are separate from the tuning
price. If a condition prevents safe calibration, tuning may be
paused until the issue is corrected.
